The Castle of Roseto Capo Spulico, firmly perched on the cliff, dates back to the 10th century. As you remember
San Vitale da Castronuovo: it is on the "Petrae Roseti" that the Saint founded a monastery. On the ruins
The "Castrum Petra e Roseti" was built in the XI century by the Normans. At that time the
castle marked the boundary between the possessions of Roberto il Guiscardo and his brother Roger II (1105-1154),
father of Costanza d'Altavilla, heir of the Kingdom of Sicily and mother of Frederick II Hoheustaufen (1194-1250).
In the 13th century (1229), formerly the Temple of the Order, it was requisitioned by Frederick II to the Knights Templars, for
retaliation to their betrayal during the VI crusade in the Holy Land (1228).
It was restored and adapted to a military fortress; in fact from the Angevin Registers the garrison's entity is known
assigned to the fortress that in 1275 is composed of the castellan, a squire and twelve guards. The same
Federico, to whom the Castle was very close to his heart, in his will, as reported in "Da Monumenta
Germaniae Historia, Legu, Sectio IV: Tomus II, n.274 "assigned the territory of Porta Roseti to the natural son
Manfredi, while all the castles and especially the "Templar Petrae Roseti" to the legitimate children who will be
also King of Jerusalem. "Today, after careful restoration work by the owner company,
it shines as a classic example of Templar derivation of Federica architecture.
The large courtyard surrounded by crenellated walls is enclosed by an arch bearing alchemical-templars crests like the
"Rosa" and the "Gigli" that make the "Castrum Petrae Roseti" a Temple of the Order.
Recently, to complete the historical investigation based on studies of the Zarista Archives, it is known that, in the Castle
It was guarded by Frederick II, the Holy Shroud.
This discovery is corroborated by studies on the castle 's lapicides, which led to the reading of the sign of the
"Griffon", which belonged to Federico
II and to the "Seal of Solomon" which reproduces that of the Temple of
Jerusalem.
Today, after careful restoration works by Count Giuseppe Cosentino, owner of the
structure, houses one of the most suggestive and unique receptive structures of its kind in the whole of southern Italy.
